Suggestions after driving the Polestar 2 for 1 year

After 1 year and only 7,000km, including a vacation to the south of France, I start to appreciate the car more and more. It is not the most economical electric car, but it is very stylish, luxurious, drives exceptionally well, great handling, tons of comfort and above all more practical than a Tesla Model 3. 

In the meantime, I only noted points of interest in this blog that I missed or was bothered by.

Pilot Assist

Steering corrections a little too severe on the highway

When you turn on the Pilot Assist on the highway, the corrections are too much and it is frequently followed by additional adjustments to the initial correction. Instead of choosing an average path within the driving lane over a distance of, say, 50 to 100 metres, the Pilot Assist performs full-fledged manoeuvres fairly frequently. And since the initial correction is too large, a correction in the opposite direction follows afterwards. As a result, you can feel the car rocking slightly from side to side. Even the passengers noticed when the Pilot Assist was on and when it was off.

Instinctively, there are 2 solutions. Either the initial correction is not made immediately but compared to subsequent corrections and then averaged. At higher speeds such as on the highway this should not be a problem. Another solution is to effectively calculate a smooth curve in the lane with a margin of error on both sides. 

Unexpected early braking for a vehicle in front of you at 90 km/h

It seems that the Adaptive Cruise Control panics a bit when you approach a truck that is in the same lane as you but moving at a much slower speed.

As long as the vehicle in front of you is too far away it is not detected by the radar. The adaptive cruise control icon remains light gray indicating that she has not yet seen the truck. Inevitably, you will approach the truck and when the vehicle in front is about 200 meters away, the Polestar suddenly starts to brake abruptly! This is especially annoying if you want to keep up with the other traffic around you. It is not only a surprise when the car suddenly brakes, but I can imagine that the cars behind you are not amused either. You have to turn on your indicator very well in advance to prevent the car from braking when it detects the truck.  

It would be better if the Pilot Assist would brake much later and take more into account the minimum distance set in the Adaptive Cruise Control. If that is not possible (legally/technically) then I would rather get a warning so you have time to take over control yourself.

The Adaptive Cruise Control does intervene in a subtle way when the speed difference with the car in front is not so big.

Accelerate when the car in front is halfway across the center line

A slower-moving vehicle merges into your lane and the Adaptive Cruise Control intervenes very nicely by slowing down and maintaining the minimum distance. When the vehicle in front leaves your lane again, the Adaptive Cruise Control waits until all wheels of the vehicle in front of you have crossed the white line before accelerating again. This is not the "natural" way of driving because in general you accelerate when the car in front has left your lane halfway.

360 camera

In itself, the 360 camera with top view is very handy for maneuvering. 

It would be even more convenient if you could see the image of a selected camera AND the 360 degree view at the same time. Currently if you click on a camera then half the screen goes black. 

Center display

Fan speed

Although you can adjust the fan speed through the temperature and by asking Google it would be handy to have an icon on the homepage to adjust this directly.

Audio settings 

To adjust the sound characteristics you now have to detour through Apps > Settings > Sound and then equalizer. It would be ideal if a shortcut/link would be added to the audio pop-up when you adjust the volume. You are briefly shown all possible sound volumes and here a link to the sound settings could be added.

Recent Apps

Switching between 2 or 3 applications is still a bit awkward because there is no "App Switcher" function foreseen. I am thinking about the classical ALT+TAB function in the computer world where you can switch very quickly to the other "active" or "recent" applications.

Consumption Information

Personally, I am disappointed with the current version of the consumption information in the center display.

The average and immediate consumption are shown via the graph but the numerical values are not displayed. 

Actually I expect to see graphs of the consumption over time and this over different periods (1day, month, year, total).  

But also the charging curve is interesting, as well as the battery status, temperature, and so on. 

In the end, this is a computer on wheels and all that data is certainly available. So it should just be a matter of using the data and presenting it.

Below is an example of a Tesla chart which is more interesting than the Polestar version.

Drivers display

Google Maps hangs

This may be due to my particular Polestar but from time to time the Google Maps in the driver's display gets stuck. The only way to reset it is to hold down the home button on the center display and do a complete reset.

Kilometer units for range

The range of the Polestar 2 is always shown in brackets of 10 kilometers and it would be more pleasant if the range was calculated per kilometer. This also means that you can immediately see whether a calmer driving style is beneficial to the range. Now, the range will not be updated for a longer period of time untill the 10 kilometer slice has been used up. 

GPS speed

The Polestar undoubtedly has the GPS speed which is more accurate than the traditional speed measurement. Why is this speed not displayed as well?

Radio / Music and Time

Display Information

The music station/source (Spotity) should be shown in one of the displays at all times. By itself, the driver's display seems like a good location to me. And the same goes for the time now shown on the center display. I always look for it in the driver's display only to realize it is shown on the center display.

Scan function

A very useful feature in my previous BMW was the scan function for the radio. The radio would hold on to each station for about 10 seconds and then move on to the next station. If there is a station you want to keep listing to then you press the scan button again to stop  the scanning.

Interface

Performance Pack stylesheet

This is definitely a "nice to have" and no significant added value but it would be nice for Performance Pack owners to be able to choose a slightly different color theme that better matches the Performance Pack. I'm thinking gold buttons instead of orange and possibly an also high-tech driver's display.

Body color

And again a nice to have, that has been asked many times, is that you can set the color of the Polestar shown on the 2 displays.

Google Maps

My saved places

While preparing for a long trip I use the "saved places" of Google Maps to save places of interest, charging stations and restaurants.

By default you already get "Want to go", "Favorites" and "Starred Places" but you can create other lists via your web browser. And per trip I create a separate list.

The unfortunate thing is that these "non-standard" lists do not appear in Google Maps in the car. And so you MUST use the "Want to go" list and take out the already existing points.

Personal notes

A handy trick I use is to number the charging stations by day and specify up to which SoC I should be charging.  This gives me a handy overview of the charging stations for that day.

But... also these notes are not shown in the Google Maps application in the car. And you can only find out which charging point you are going to have to select based on the address.

Decent route planning

This is one of the biggest strengths of A Better Route Planner, the ability to plan the entire route with all the charging stations you want to stop at. And in Google Maps it is not possible to plan a route with multiple charging stations as stopovers. If it is possible then I just haven't found it. So this is why I started using notes to record some sort of route.

State Of Charge at arrival

Another great benefit of ABRP is that you can specify how many SoC you want to arrive at a particular waypoint and/or endpoint. 

Muting sound

A minor annoyance is that if you want to mute the sound of Google Maps you first have to press the sound icon and then choose from 3 options: 

• mute 
• hear notifications
• unmute

When you're driving your car you don't have time to go through that list every time to see which option mutes the sound. I would prefer that by pressing the icon you can turn the sound off/on immediately. It would be even more convenient to be able to use the command "Hey Google, mute the sound of Google Maps".

Polestar app for mobile device

Since this summer, I regularly have to start the app twice because the app cannot connect to the car. At the bottom of the screen it then says "Cannot initialize remote vehicle functionality". (Click on the image to get a better view of the error message)

Furthermore, I have also noticed that the percentage of the SoC is updated but not always the range. 

In addition, I would find the following items very interesting:

- message when the alarm goes off 

- message when car is charged (this should already exist but I never received a message)

- access to all consumption information 

- ability to start/stop charging 

- odometer

Open tailgate half way

Although you can set the maximum opening of the tailgate this opening will always be used. It is only in certain situations like underground parking lots where I sometimes want to open the tailgate only half way. It has happened a few times that the tailgate bumps into the low concrete ceiling.

Therefore it would be ideal if you could open the tailgate half way by pressing the remote twice or let the tailgate open as long as you hold down the button. If you release the button then the tailgate stops.

Suggesties na 1 jaar met de Polestar 2 gereden te hebben

Na 1 jaar en slechts 7.000km, inclusief een vakantie naar Zuid Frankrijk, bevalt de wagen steeds meer en meer. Het is niet de zuinigste elektrische wagen maar ze is zeer stijlvol, luxueus, rijdt bijzonder goed, geweldige weglegging, bakken comfort en vooral praktischer dan een Tesla Model 3. 

In de tussentijd heb ik enkel aandachtspunten genoteerd in deze blog die ik mistte of stoorde.

Pilot Assist

Stuur correcties iets te hevig op de snelweg

Wanneer je op de snelweg de Pilot Assist aan zet dan zijn de correcties te iets te groot waardoor ze ook frequent wordt gevolgd door bijsturingen op de initiële correctie. In plaats van een gemiddeld pad te kiezen binnen het rijvak over een afstand van bijvoorbeeld 50 à 100 meter, voert de Pilot Assist redelijk frequent volwaardige manoeuvres uit. En aangezien de initiële bijsturing te groot is volgt er nadien een correctie in de tegenovergestelde richting. Hierdoor voel je de wagen lichtjes schommelen van links naar rechts. Zelfs passagiers merkte op wanneer de Pilot Assist aanstond en wanneer niet.

Gevoelsmatig zijn er 2 oplossingen. Of de initiële correctie wordt niet meteen uitgevoerd maar vergeleken met daarop volgende correcties om vervolgens een gemiddelde te nemen. Bij hogere snelheden zoals op de snelweg zou dit geen probleem mogen zijn. Een andere oplossing is dat er effectief een vloeiende lijn in het baanvak wordt berekend met een foutmarge aan beide kanten. 

Onverwacht vroeg remmen voor voorligger aan 90 km/h

Het lijkt erop dat de Adaptieve Cruise Control een beetje in paniek raakt wanneer je een vrachtwagen nadert die op de dezelfde rijstrook rijdt maar aan een veel lagere snelheid.

Zo lang het voortuig voor je te ver weg is wordt ze niet opgemerkt door de radar. Het adaptieve cruisecontrol icoontje blijft licht grijs wat aangeeft dat ze de vrachtwagen nog niet heeft gezien. Onvermijdelijk zal je de vrachtwagen naderen en wanneer de voorligger op zo’n 200 meter afstand is,  gaat de Polestar opeens abrupt afremmen! Dit is vooral hinderlijk als je wil meerijden met het andere verkeer om je heen. Het is niet alleen verschieten wanneer de wagen opeens afremt maar ik kan me inbeelden dat de auto's achter je er ook niet mee kunnen lachen. Je moet al héél vroeg op voorhand je knipperlicht aanzetten om te voorkomen dat de wagen afremt wanneer ze de vrachtwagen gaat zien.  

Het zou beter zijn als de Pilot Assist veel later zou afremmen en meer rekening zou houden met de minimum afstand die is ingesteld in de Adaptieve Cruise Control. Als dat (wettelijk/technisch) niet mogelijk is dan zou ik liever een waarschuwing krijgen zodat je zelf de tijd hebt om de controle over te nemen.

De Adaptieve Cruise Control grijpt wel subtiel in wanneer het snelheidsverschil met de voorligger niet zo groot is.

Versnellen wanneer de voorligger half over de middellijn is

Een trager rijdend voertuig voegt in op jouw rijstrook en de Adaptive Cruise Control grijpt wel heel netjes in door rustig af te remmen en de minimum afstand wordt bewaard. Wanneer de voorligger jouw rijbaan weer verlaat wacht de Adaptive Cruise Control totdat alle wielen van de voorligger over de witte streep zijn alvorens te versnellen. Dit is niet de "natuurlijke" manier van rijden want over het algemeen versnel je al wanneer de voorligger jouw rijstrook half heeft verlaten.

360 camera

Op zich is de 360 camera met bovenaanzicht zeer handig om te manoeuvreren. 

Het zou nog handiger zijn indien je wel het beeld van een gekozen camera EN het 360 graden beeld tegelijk kan zien. Als je nu een camera aanklikt dan wordt de helft van het scherm zwart. 

Middendisplay

Ventilator stand

Alhoewel je de ventilator stand kan aanpassen via de temperatuur en door het aan Google te vragen zou het toch wel handig zijn om op de homepage een icoon te hebben om dit direct te kunnen aanpassen.

Audio instellingen 

Om de geluidskarakteristieken aan te passen moet je nu een omweg maken via Apps > Instellingen > Geluid en vervolgens equalizer. Het zou ideaal zijn indien er een shortcut/link toegevoegd zou worden aan de audio pop-up wanneer je het volume aanpast. Je krijgt dan kortstondig alle mogelijke geluidsvolumes te zien en hier zou een link naar de geluidsinstellingen kunnen staan.

Recente Apps

Schakelen tussen 2 of 3 applicaties is nog een beetje onhandig omdat er geen "App Switcher" functie is voorzien. Ik denk aan de klassieke ALT+TAB functie in de computer wereld waar je heel snel kan overschakelen naar de andere "actieve" of "recente" applicaties.

Verbruiksinformatie

Persoonlijk ben ik teleurgesteld in de huidige versie van de verbruiksinformatie in het middendisplay.

Het gemiddeld en direct verbruik worden wel getoond via de grafiek maar de numerieke waarden worden niet getoond. 

Eigenlijk verwacht ik hier grafieken te zien van het verbruik in de tijd en dit over verschillende periodes (1dag, maand, jaar, totaal).  

Maar ook de laadcurve is interessant, alsook de batterij status,  temperatuur, enzovoort. 

Uiteindelijk is dit een computer op wielen en al die gegevens zijn zeker beschikbaar. Dus zou het gewoon een kwestie moeten zijn van de gegevens te gebruiken en aan te reiken.

Hieronder een voorbeeld van een Tesla grafiek wat toch al interessanter is dan de Polestar versie.

Bestuurdersdisplay

Maps blijft hangen

Dit ligt misschien aan mijn specifieke Polestar maar van tijd tot tijd blijft de Google Maps in het bestuurdersdisplay hangen. De enigste manier om hem te resetten is door de home knop van het middendisplay ingedrukt te houden.

Kilometer eenheden voor bereik

Het bereik van de Polestar 2 wordt steeds getoond in schijven 10 kilometer en het zou aangenamer zijn indien het bereik per kilometer telt. Dit houdt ook in dat je meteen kan zien of een rustigere rijstijl bevorderlijk is voor het bereik. Want nu zal het bereik gewoon langer blijven hangen tot de schijf van 10 kilometer weer opgebruikt is. 

GPS snelheid

De Polestar beschikt ongetwijfeld over de GPS snelheid die accurater is dan de klassieke snelheidsmeting. Waarom wordt deze snelheid ook niet getoond?

Radio / Muziek en tijd

Informatie tonen

De muziekzender / bron (Spotity) zou ten alle tijden getoond moeten worden in één van de displays. Op zich lijkt de bestuurdersdisplay me wel een goede locatie. En hetzelfde geldt voor de tijd die nu op het middendisplay getoond wordt. Ik zoek deze altijd in het bestuurdersdisplay om me dan te realiseren dat die op het middendisplay wordt getoond.

Scan functie

Een zeer handige functie in mijn vorige BMW was de scan functie voor de radio. De radio blijft zo'n 10 seconden hangen bij elke zender om vervolgens door te gaan naar de volgende zender. Is er een zender die je wil behouden dan druk je nog eens op de scan knop om de zender vast te houden.

Interface

Performance Pack stylesheet

Dit is absoluut een "nice to have" en geen significante toegevoegde waarde maar het zou leuk zijn voor de Performance Pack eigenaars om een iets andere kleuren thema te kunnen kiezen die beter matcht bij de Performance Pack. Ik denk aan goude knoppen in plaats van oranje en eventueel een ook high-tech bestuurdersdisplay.

Koetswerk kleur

En wederom een nice to have... die al vaker gevraagd werd is dat je de kleur van de getoonde Polestar op de 2 displays kan instellen.

Google Maps

Mijn opgeslagen plaatsen

Tijdens het voorbereiden van een lange reis gebruik ik de "opgeslagen plaatsen" van Google Maps om bezienswaardigheden, laadpalen en restaurants op te slaan.

Standaard krijg je al "Wil ik heen", "Favorieten" en "Plaatsen met een ster" maar je kan via je web browser ook andere lijsten aanmaken. En per reis maak ik dan een aparte lijst.

Het spijtige is dat deze "niet standaard" lijsten niet verschijnen in de Google Maps in de auto. En je MOET dus de "Wil ik heen" lijst gebruiken en de reeds bestaande punten eruit halen.

Persoonlijke notities

Een handig trucje dat ik toepas is om de laadpalen per dag te nummeren en op te geven tot welke SoC ik zou moeten laden.  Zo krijg ik een handig overzicht van de laadpalen van die dag.

Maar... ook deze notities worden niet getoond in de Google Maps applicatie in de auto. En je kan dan enkel aan de hand van het adres achterhalen welke laadpunt je gaat moet selecteren.

Deftige routeplanning

Dit is één van de grootste troeven van A Better Route Planner, de mogelijkheid om de volledige route te plannen met alle laadpunten die je wil aandoen. En in Google Maps is het niet mogelijk om een route te plannen met meerdere laadpalen als tussenstops. Als het wel mogelijk is dan heb ik het gewoon niet gevonden. Dit is dan ook de reden waarom ik de notities ben gaan gebruiken om een soort van route vast te leggen.

State Of Charge bij aankomst

Nog een grote troef van ABRP is dat je kan opgeven met hoeveel SoC je wil aankomen op een bepaald tussenpunt en/of eindpunt. 

Geluid dempen

Een kleine ergernis is dat als je het geluid van Google Maps wil dempen je eerst op het geluid icoontje moet drukken en vervolgens uit 3 opties moet kiezen: 

• geluid uitzetten 
• meldingen horen 
• dempen opheffen

Als je onderweg bent met de auto heb je geen tijd om elke keer dat lijstje te overlopen om te zien welke optie het geluid gewoon uitzet. Ik zou liever hebben dat je met de druk op het icoontje het geluid meteen uit/aan zet. Het zou nog handiger om het commando "Hey Google, demp het geluid van Google Maps" te kunnen gebruiken.

Polestar app voor telefoon

Sinds deze zomer moet ik de app regelmatig twee keer opstarten omdat de app geen verbinding kan maken met de auto. Onderaan het scherm staat dan de melding "Kan voertuigfunctionaliteit op afstand niet initialiseren". (klik op de afbeelding om de foutmelding beter te zien)

Verder heb ik ook gemerkt dat het percentage van de SoC wel wordt vernieuwd maar het bereik niet altijd. 

Daarnaast zou ik volgende zaken ook wel heel interessant vinden:

- berichtje wanneer het alarm af gaat 

- berichtje wanneer auto opgelden is (dit zou al bestaan maar ik heb nooit een bericht ontvangen)

- toegang tot alle verbruiksinformatie  

Achterklep half openen

Alhoewel je de maximale opening van de achterklep kan instellen zal deze opening altijd gebruikt worden. Het is enkel in bepaalde situaties zoals ondergrondse parkings waar ik soms de achterklep maar half wil openen. Het is al een paar keer gebeurd dat de klep tegen het lage betonnen plafond stoot.

Daarom zou het ideaal zijn dat je de achterklep half kan openen door 2 maal op de afstandsbediening te drukken of dat klep opent zo lang je de knop ingedrukt uit. Laat je de knop los dan stopt de achterklep.
